Tourism Saskatoon’s The Evolution of an Artist

605

Passion plays an integral role in the projects that I choose to take on. It is something that has been driving my career since I started my journey as a filmmaker. Now, to be clear, these choices are still affecting how much money I make. I know however, that as I keep pushing to work on projects that I want to work on, I am in turn, creating the dream job for myself. Working with Kim Coates truly reaffirmed that the decisions I am making will eventually get to a point where I am making the money that I want to be making on the work I produce.

Choosing what pays versus what makes you happy

If I was to go the corporate route and focus on quantity verses quality and produce more work, I would be able to make a killing in the local market. Locally, the potential client list is smaller than a lot of larger centres which in turn affects how fast a business grows. I have said to myself that I will test the local market for 16 months and then if I am unable to find enough forward thinking clients, I will relocate to a larger centre. At the root of all the decisions I am making these days, they all boil down to getting me closer to my goals.

For this project, Cinescapes Collective was hired by Tourism Saskatoon to produce a campaign showcasing some of Saskatoon’s local and international talents. For this specific chapter, we chose to feature Kim Coates as we felt he would be the perfect ambassador for the city. Working with Kim Coates was an absolute privilege. He not only was easy to work with but also came with a vision for where he thought the project should go.

While working on this project, it became very clear that I have my career in my hands and the only way I would be successful is through hard work and dedication. Long hours are part of the job and will only get you closer to your goals. For me, this project truly gave me a kick in the rear end and showed me that I need to kick it into high gear if I want to accomplish what I want to accomplish with my career. It was very evident when talking with the crew that many people took something away from this project. Make sure to check out the BTS below to see what a few crew members learned from this production.

About the Film

The short features Kim Coates who documents his journey from his early childhood days to the present. It offers some words of advice and inspiration for others who are on their own journey as artists.

Kim Coates is a Canadian-American actor who has worked in both Canadian and American films and television series. He has worked on Broadway portraying Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and in the lead role of Macbeth performed at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. He currently stars as Tig Trager in the FX series Sons of Anarchy.

Behind the Scenes

This behind the scenes film showcases how the production came together along with our thoughts on working with Kim. We also talk about passion and the role that it plays in the work we produce.

Starting at the Capitol and ending at the University of Saskatchewan, Kim takes the viewer on a journey through Saskatoon as he revisits some of his old childhood hangout spots.

Creative Integrity

Working with anyone new is always a learning experience. For us, working with someone like Kim was a new experience. We have worked with people of his calibre before but none of them had the creative vision so refined. When going into the first phone call with Kim, it was clear that he had a vision for where he wanted the production to go. For us, we knew it would be a balancing act between his vision and what we were hoping to get out of the project.

When it came to post, Kim was a huge asset. After delivering the first edit, we were able to work back and forth with him to refine the direction of the story. Although there were some decisions that were made that weren’t necessarily what we were hoping for, we are extremely happy with the edit and could not have gotten the edit to where it is without the help of Kim. A true professional!
