Day 30: Why are the easy things so hard?
Day 30 of my journey centered around a theme that felt both literal and deeply metaphorical: finding the sunlight. This concept led me to explore the pursuit of clarity, hope, and direction in both my creative work and personal life. What does it mean to seek the light? And why do we sometimes struggle to embrace what seems so simple?
Seeking Light in the Creative Process
As I worked through the first draft of a TV show pitch package, I found myself reflecting on what truly sets a project apart. What makes it meaningful? What makes it worth pursuing? In the middle of my deep work session, an old notification popped up on my calendar—something I had written to myself three months ago: “Create something worth selling.”
This unexpected reminder was a moment of pause. It resonated with my thoughts on finding the sunlight—not just looking for external validation, but truly crafting something that holds value. It forced me to think about the why behind my work and how I could refine it further.
The Metaphor of Sunlight
Sunlight is essential for life. It nourishes, it sustains, and it helps things grow. In many ways, it acts as a natural metaphor for the things we need but often neglect—clarity, simplicity, and presence. If something as fundamental as sunlight can have such a profound impact, why don’t we prioritize it more in our daily lives?
This thought expanded into a broader question: Why are the easy things so hard? If we know what brings us light—whether it’s creative fulfillment, meaningful relationships, or even just getting outside—why do we resist it? This reflection shaped the way I approached my work for the rest of the day, encouraging me to strip away unnecessary complexity and focus on what truly matters.
A Lesson in Perspective
Later in the evening, another moment reinforced this lesson. My daughter, getting ready for gymnastics, had a meltdown over the colors she was wearing for the Chinese New Year. In her mind, wearing the right colors meant good luck. My initial reaction was impatient—I was still in work mode, caught between responsibilities. But as I took a step back, I realized something: she wasn’t just being dramatic. She was expressing something deeply important to her.
This was another form of finding the sunlight—understanding that sometimes, the things we dismiss hold real significance for someone else. It was a lesson in shifting perspective, in listening, and in recognizing the small but meaningful lights that exist around us every day.
Moving Forward
As I step into Day 31, I carry this intention with me: To remain open to where the light shows up—even in unexpected places. It’s not just about chasing inspiration or big ideas, but about noticing the little moments of clarity and wisdom that present themselves along the way.
What’s the light you’re chasing right now? How do you find the sunlight in your own journey?
Let’s continue the conversation.
